Discover the 2 Types of Blogs

There are two types of blogs in the world.

  1. Written by the author for the reader.
  2. Written by the author for the author.

Both types exist in the business world.

Go read Dell’s blog.

Visit the blogs of Cisco, or Bill Marriott’s blog.

Read the blog of author Seth Godin, or fellow author Tim Ferris’ blog.

See what Wells Fargo is blogging.

Discover the New York Times’ many blogs.

Learn business ideas from Amber Naslund at Brass Tack Thinking, Carrie Kerpen at Likeable Media, and Joe Pulizzi at the Content Marketing Institute.

Each of these blogs is different. Each contains different content and is targeted at different audiences.

The objective of every blog is the same: to inspire you.

Maybe you’ll read their posts and be inspired to tweet the link to your friends. Maybe you’ll add a comment. Maybe you’re the kind of person to print it and tack it on the office bulletin board so others can be inspired from what inspires you. Maybe you’ll think about it for the next 5 minutes.

I don’t know if anyone is reading this sentence. I have no way of knowing if you are here.

So…who am I writing for? A nameless, faceless body if one exists; or myself? I would like to think that someone, you, is following this drivel of a paragraph. But I do not know.

I continue to write for me.

There are two types of blogs in the world.

Every blog is both.

  1. Did this: http://ariherzog.com/blog-post-series/#comment-65333 have anything to do with this: http://ariherzog.com/2-types-of-blogs/ ?

“Every blog is both.” – interesting view… I suppose you might be right. But then again, it really depends on the blog.

“The objective of every blog is the same: to inspire you.” – I would love to think so too, but there are those out there in it for the short-run to make a quick buck…

  2. As a blogger I was first focused on writing for myself, as time goes by, I tend to gravitate towards writing for other people now. And I’m starting to see the return too :)

  3. In the initial days, but I wrote stuff, but never got any sort of traffic. I guess, I wrote for only myself indeed. Note to self: need to write for the people and not for myself.

  4. I think all blogs start out for the Author, it is something they are interested in, care about or they want others to know about. As they blog they get comments and things shift or change and become more for the reader, though still along the lines of what the Author wanted to write about. So as long as you can intertwine them and still enjoy what you are writing I think you will end up with a successful blog.

  5. Why did you place two horses on that pic in a post?

  6. I was totally focused on what I wanted in the beginning and then when I started o get to know the SEO business I started to look out for what consumers really looked for. That is how it all started. Now I know that content and consumer is king and I write fior them.

  7. I never thought there is a blog written by an author to another author because I have always though that we write to inspire our readers only.
However we can also get inspired by our own writing if we learn that we are are inspiring our readers which also acts as a great motivation to do it more.

  8. This statement is interesting “there are two types of blogs in the world. Every blog is both” I partially agree with you but here is another list of blogs here you can take to the bank;

    1. Vlogs- these are video blogs
2.Reverse Blogs(inverse blogs)-communities of bloggers come together under one heading to contribute to the overall blog.
3.Personal Blogs- By one person for own personal interests
4.Business Blogs-for biussineses to maintain their brand
5.Micro-Blogs- anytime you post on twitter of any social media then you are micro-blogging.
