The following is a guest interview with Ayan Sen, a 21-year-old internet entrepreneur. He lives in Canada and blogs about making money online.

When did you start blogging?

I have been blogging since January 2009, when I started my first website on steps to create a website. I then began a project at twitnine.com; and later at get-free-web-traffic.com. I mostly write about website creation and web traffic. Internet marketing is my favourite topic to write about.

Why did you decide to create a blog?

The main purpose was to try something new and develop my knowledge as well as experiencing the online world of business.

Your website URL at steps-to-create-a-website.com is clearly taking advantage of search engine optimization. Why did you decide to create that URL?

The reason I decided to build this website is because I wanted to create a reliable website for people to understand the untold facts about website creation. And yes the website is taking SEO advantages as well, I built my site that way so that I can actually show it to my visitors that I really know what am I talking about.

The links down the left sidebar of your site cover a wealth of information — from blogging to social networking to making money online. Do you consider everything to be necessary for website creation? How would someone know if one element over another is more important?

In some aspect yes, they are important related to website creation. Building a website is not all about design a website on a HTML editor and uploads the files on a domain name. There are more stuff to it such as marketing, monetizing and etc. Marketing is the most important part of any website. Without any traffic, the website is useless. And building a social network is another issue we face nowadays, everyone is trying to build something like next Facebook or Twitter but they do not realize that how much money is involved there and if it does not work, they will end up with a pile of debts. All the stuffs that I have listed on my site, they are all related to website build either directly or indirectly.

You stress that webmasters and bloggers consider affiliate marketing. What is your definition of affiliate marketing, what are some examples of it, and why do you suggest people do it?

Affiliate marketing means that you sell somebody’s products or services and earn a commission from it. Like there are real estate agents or insurance brokers and etc. it’s the same concept except on the net. Google Adsense is a form of affiliate marketing.

But I mostly point out to those bloggers who list their affiliate links irrelevant to the contents. For example if my website is about social media and I place one of my affiliate links on fashion, this is simply not going to work out. I have seen people doing these mistakes a lot. That just gives them a bad impression for their visitors as well as the search engines as well. And on top of all, they do not earn money through the affiliate programs.

What is the difference between different payment models? Why should someone choose one over another?

PPC means pay per click and PPI means pay per impression and PPS means pay per sales. I would chose PPC over anything, of course the pay is less than PPS per unit but it is less stressful and webmasters do not have to stress themselves on hard selling pitch in the content.

How does one earn money through affiliate marketing? Is there an average amount that any new affiliate marketer should be expected to earn?

You can sign up for affiliate websites such as Clickbank and Commission Junction, choose a product, then your specific url. Sell their products through your specific url and get commission for it. New affiliate marketers should not expect anything at all. They should first learn how does it work and then try to expect some money, But it does take time to actually earn money from affiliate marketing but possible and a very good source of income if you can master the tips and tactics.

Are there any resources you can recommend that talk about making money online?

A good resource for beginners is sitesell.com. For learning free affiliate marketing, see Thirtydaychallenge.com and for learning about how to make money online, go to forums.digitalpoint.com.

That’s a very good guest post, and certainly nice to see youngsters starting the entrepreneurial way. There is no doubt that Ayan Sen can go very far – and being 37 myself, I recognize I could have started a lot sooner if I wasn’t so skeptic towards blogging.

Best of luck to Ayan. Keep up the good work. :-)

Great interview especially covering the topics on affiliate marketing. It’s really shocking to see websites that do have affiliate links that have nothing to do with the content of their site or page; simply put, just offer up the best information back by a product you’d openly endorse – now that’s marketing!

I like the way you purchased your domain/URL with hyphens. Although from what I have read Google does a great job separating combined words, it was even suggested by Matt Cutts to use hypens in your posts and urls and even said to use hyphens and not underscores. Since I am a newbie at all of this, I love people who share their knowledge and information! It makes it easier for us with limited experience and helps us learn faster!
