Film critic Roger Ebert tweeted it best about the 83rd annual Academy Awards broadcast February 27, 2011:
He may as well have tweeted about @TheAcademy’s official Twitter messages which were equally dull.
Kudos to the social media team to include the #Oscars hashtag so people could click it and watch what else people tweeted with the tag, but otherwise these official tweets were unsocial and boring.
By way of comparison with the February 13, 2011 broadcast of the 53rd annual Grammy Awards, have a look at a reverse chronological ordering of official film tweets and musical tweets. Pay special attention to the frequency of tweets (from each account) that link to pictures, retweet performers, and make the Twitter experience fun:
First, the unsocial Academy…
Second, the social Grammys…
To be fair, that Grammy list of nominees number over 200, whereas the Academy’s list of Oscar nominees number 12 which begs the question if actors, actresses, directors, producers, and assorted crew tweet. But of course they do, right?
