How CommentLuv Promotes Your Blog

by Ari Herzog on Mar. 28, 2011 · 36 comments

In the comment section on this blog, you will notice that every person who contributes a comment and types the blog URL into the website field receives a link to his or her latest blog post subsequent to the comment. By way of example on a recent article about the importance of writing Twitter messages manually, you will see the following comment by Chris Apple:

Blog comment by Chris Apple

The leading text underneath his comment and the accompanying link are generated by a WordPress plugin called CommentLuv.

Registered CommentLuv users (and if you have a blog it is a no-brainer to register and sign-up), upon entering their blog URL into the website field will see an automatically-generated drop-down list of their last 10 blog posts. Unregistered users get no list and only their latest post is displayed.

There is a reason why you’d want to register your blog because on a blog article such as this one about a blog plugin, what if one of your last 10 articles was about a different plugin? That would be a contextual and relevant link that you could choose to be displayed with your comment. If you are unregistered then your irrelevant blog post might show instead.

All CommentLuv-powered blogs display a heart-like box in the vicinity of the comment submission button to let you know the plugin is installed. CommentLuv-registered bloggers also enjoy commenting on each other’s blogs because of the potential of inbound traffic.

Between CommentLuv and KeywordLuv, another blog promotion plugin, you will never second guess yourself again whether someone clicks to your blog — because you are telling the person with KeywordLuv what specifically your blog is about and you are telling the person with CommentLuv which of your last 10 posts you want that person to click.

If you are a blogger — whether you use WordPress, Blogspot, Typepad, or another platform — what are you waiting for? Install CommentLuv on your own blog and pass on the love to your commentators, too!

Disclosure:
CommentLuv is not paying me to write this. I’m paying them.

My own observation is the same – if a blog has a commentluv plug in. the number of readers and commentators are higher. But unfortunately, some blog owners don’t want to install it :) Ari, you are a very innovative blogger! Good job! That’s why we are here and because I love your blog!

Ari Herzog March 28, 2011 at 3:20 PM

Click over to the link about KeywordLuv… you may want to help direct people what your site is about.

Maude Fernandez May 16, 2011 at 4:09 PM

The recent changes on commentluv give blog owners the flexibility in controlling the behavior of the plugin, which includes removing the link if he doesn’t it to appear anyway.

I have to admit Ari, your blog was the inspiration for me installing CommentLuv on my blog. I saw how effectively you were using it on your blog to create & keep the conversation going in your comments.

You might want to sign up as an affiliate… $ =] #justsayin

There’s an affiliate program? How much $ you earning?

I imagine in order to make $ off of CommentLuv you would need to have some comments on your blog…*crickets* lol

No, I just noticed they had an affiliate program while I was visiting my profile page on CommentLuv.

Perfect for you though Ari!

Yes, Ari. I agree. I view CommentLuv as a great way to reward for commenting too. You beat me to the post! :)

I don’t even view it as a reward, though others use that word too. I view it as incentive.

Ah, incentive is probably a better word for it.

I’m really in love with commentluv blogs and I’m compiling every blogs that I’ve visited that uses this plugin same with keywordluv blogs. Though sad to say that because of the akismet plugins other of my comments seems not to appear.

You refer to your comments being treated as false positives under Akismet? One reason might be that you’re linking to a folder two levels deep?

Keith Davis March 28, 2011 at 1:54 PM

Evening Ari
Love that little red heart of commentLuv.
I always see it as a small reward for people who leave comments.
The red heart doesn’t appear next to comments on your blog.
Have you disabled it or is it a glitch?

It’s not next to comments but it’s below your comment before you hit the submit button.

CommentLuv is a great plugin and tool for any blogger. The only reason I could see that someone would not want to install it is if they are concerned about the number of links on a site. But then, if that’s the concern, why would they even allow comments.

I see no reason NOT to install this if you’re blogging. It gives the readers an incentive to write a comment and interact with the blogger.

Indeed, which is why I try to have an arsenal of different titles among recent articles so I can selectively choose what I want you to read.

Hey Ari – I love the commentLuv app too. When I installed DISQUS, I didn’t realize at first that they couldn’t co-exist. It’s time to go back to native comments and re-install commentLuv.

I really like sharing the work of others and that is one thing commentLuv is great for — discovering new blogs : )

Thanks for sharing and reminding me to re-install CL!

Have you visited a blog you’ve never been to before, or seen commentluv links up and down a page, and click click click the links without reading the comments? Guilty.

Hi Ari,

I remember when I first discovered CommentLuv, I thought it was the neatest tool for *other* bloggers to have. I blog over at Blogspot, so I’m accustomed to missing out on all the neat-o tools that others get to use over at WP or with their paid blogs.

Over at Ileane’s blog, I discovered that CommentLuv could work for Blogspot blogs, and her walkthrough really helped me figure out how. I was so excited!

It’s really been a boon for my blog; it’s bringing in a lot of traffic I otherwise would not have gotten any other way.

I’ve been trying to find the “plug in” link on Wordpress for a couple of days now (since Ari’s blog article was published) and I’m still hunting. If I’m not successful pretty soon, I guess it’s no CommentLuv for me.

Joomla doesn’t have anything that resembles CommentLuv or KeywordLuv. If it has, I would have installed them right away. Because I have seen how these apps worked for you, Ari, and I so appreciate how you are giving out these incentives to the people who follow what you post. I would have loved to do the same, but as it is, I just give back the love by other means like RTs.

Hi Ari,

My site is on Drupal. I know ComLuv is designed for WP sites. I will have to check the Drupal community to see if this plug in (we call them “modules” in Drupal) has been developed.

Christopher Roberts March 30, 2011 at 5:46 AM

I love both CommentLuv and KeywordLuv and use them on your blog. I don’t use CommentLuv on my philosophy blog, but I plan to use it on my new technology blog :-)

Thanks, Ari, for this nice kick in the butt. It’s indeed a good idea to get that CommentLuv plugin installed, and I’ve added it to my to-do list so I could also benefit from it. You are a tremendous inspiration for other bloggers such as myself, and I want to express this formal gratitude for your efforts.
Have a nice weekend everyone. :-)

Great article. I think CommentLuv is a pretty great idea for bloggers. I’ve added it to my blog now but I’m wondering if there are lists somewhere or a site that shows you all the other CommentLuv blogs. I would like to submit my site to something like that. Anyone know of anything like that?

I am a big fan of commentluv and keywordluv. But I wonder how much Google likes these plugins – do you see more blog traffic and better rankings in search results? Or do you think Google might see these links as spammy?

Generally speaking you do not comment purely to get a backlink; you comment because you have something interesting to say that can add to the conversation. If possible, address the blog owner by name and always contribute to the topic.
