Step 1: Your mother is a frequent reader of online business tips on Chris Brogan’s blog.
Step 2: Your mother tells you that Chris is no dummy and you should read his stuff, too.
Step 3: You subscribe to Chris’ blog, tell him you work for Uncle Sam, and ask if he knows anyone skilled in the intersection of social media and government.
Step 4: Chris suggests that you contact me.
Step 5: We become friends and create magic.
In the spirit of Dragos Roua who challenged me to continue his connection meme, I point you to a woman I never met but who was the impetus for something she could not have foreseen.
The moral is to listen to your mother. Listen to your family. Listen to your friends. Reach out to strangers, role models, those you emulate, and listen to their advice. You needn’t follow every piece of advice you receive, and Andy Krzmarzick and I may still have met despite his mother’s suggestion, but an idea can be very powerful if followed through.
An idea can be more powerful if you listen for it. Chris understands the power of listening. Do you?
Hey Ari,
Thanks for picking this up. And yes, it’s quite a powerful lesson. Listening is way much difficult than talking. And going out of the comfort zone is even harder.

Hey Ari,
Thanks for the shout out – both for me and my mom! By the way, she still follows Chris Brogan and is building a web-based business (beginning stages at http://safehealthyliving.com). In fact, she is going through an educational program to learn about leveraging social media for business and I continue to discover new tricks that she readily shares with me as she gains new knowledge…as she has done all of my life.
It just goes to show:
You’re never too old to learn.
And you’re never too old to listen.

Ari,
Wow! You’re right, little did I realize the suggestion of Andy connecting to Chris Brogan would create a personal and business relationship between you to. It brought tears to think a “mom” had a profound effect from an email idea.
I really like Chris’s article about community. It is through relationships that we form a community of friendships both for personal and business encouragement and improvement for the bigger community – the world.
Thank you for taking a look at and mentioning my blog. I hope we can help people be preventive and make choices for a healthy lifestyle in mind, body and spirit.
And so, we have “met” online.
One generation helping another to grow and create a better community for all.

The art of listening is something that many of us, alas, fail to master.
But even better than listening is putting into ACTION the good ideas we find.
