June 2010 seems like an eternity ago when I took initiative and created a LinkedIn Group to share strategies and tips in social media marketing. I invited friends and colleagues in the industry to join and participate. They did that, and they told their friends.
Over time, people none of us knew searched LinkedIn for keywords about social media marketing and also joined the group. They began posting valuable content.
There are over 4,500 LinkedIn members today. This is very humbling to me and I thank everyone.
Fast forward to August 2012 and I realized there was no Facebook Group to share strategies and tips on social media marketing.
My action to create a Facebook counterpart to the LinkedIn group was immediate. I pimped its existence to my Facebook friends and colleagues and also shared a link to the pre-existing LI members. People joined. Today there are over 120 Facebook members.
Regardless of your preferred networking site, there is a group for you to join to learn and share strategies and tips in social media marketing.

Very impressive performance. It shows what happens when you take action.
However, I have to ask.
What if instead of growing groups on other websites you grew your email subscriber list instead?
Thanks for the friendly reminder to insert a newsletter link into the post-content byline. Look above the twitter box and you can see what I just added.
Why not both?
Facebook can be a whole lot more effective in bringing targeted traffic to your blog. Yes, thanks to Edgerank it is less effective now, but it can still yield better results than email lists. If that happens in Ari’s case remains to be seen.
Actually we aren’t growing groups FOR the other websites right? Growing groups on other websites introduces you to a newer and wider audience. Am I right Ari ?
Wider, yes. Newer, unknown.
Thank you for letting us know about your group Ari, I’m always looking for more ways to promote my online business. I’ll definitely give your linkedin group a look
Thanks Ari. Its always nice to know that these kinds of groups are out there.
Thanks a lot for posting the strategies and tips on how to do social media marketing, By the way this is really helpful.
I think you should be actively participate in groups and pages and that’s enough. People will come to know you, your products, blogs etc. Thanks
Great to hear that you’ve experienced so much success with groups. LinkedIn groups do work pretty well when it comes to sharing and networking with other like-minded professionals. They’re also great places you can utilize as additional places to reach people with your content!
