Why I Ask You to Comment Right Now

Before reading anything below, add a comment first.

Write about whatever you want.

All of the comment fields are optional. Don’t want to attach your name? Leave it blank and you’ll automatically be anonymous. Leave the email address and website fields blank, too, if you want.

But, add that comment first.

Scroll to the very bottom of this page and add a comment.

When you’re ready, scroll back up and to the end of these periods…

If you are reading this sentence, I presume you already added a comment.

If the stereotype is true that everyone reads a blog post before adding a comment, you just failed that stereotype. You discovered the unknown and changed your history. You commented before reading.

You might want to do that again, somewhere else, on some other blog. Maybe you want to share an insight on a specific piece of breaking news, or on every Google-matched result from a keyword search. Take your pick of the reason why you want to add that comment, but suppose you do.

Under this reversed scenario, you would want the ability to add a comment as quickly as possible, right?

What if you couldn’t add your comment below as quickly as you did? What if you needed to follow a set of rules as a precursor to commenting?

If you are still confused why I asked you to comment first, read the next article in this series.

Comments

  1. Adding a comment Ari, just like you said. I seem to be the first to read this, as I am the first comment :)

Not sure really what you want me to comment about, but I am now very intrigued as to why I need to ad a comment without reading the article.

“Submit” > Then I can read the rest of the article!

  2. You’ve earned my trust, so here I comment.

You have me intrigued and now — invested and involved in the story, so I comment.

I didn’t leave the contact fields blank, though for a moment I was tempted to leave the comment field blank (or with a simple ellipses … )

    Scrolling up.

  3. Seth is a jackhal-headed god of chaos (ancient Egypt)

  4. I am intrigued about why I had to post first, but since I’m a rules-follower, I’m doing just that.

Can’t think of anything creative to post, so I”ll just send you warm thoughts:

Hope you have a wonderful week and are enjoying your holiday preparations.

  5. I always read a blog post before I comment, although I’ll often employ my speed-reading skills to get through it quicker than most do. So I read the whole thing before I headed down here.

I’ll be watching to see where you’re taking this!

  6. Hey Ari,

If I add an unrelevant comment to a blog post, isn’t that called spam?

    Cheers,
    John

  7. Ok, scrolling to the bottom to leave a comment… before reading the post… or other comments… am I spamming the post? :) – thanks for your thoughtful and encouraging (at least so far, at least until right now) blog.

  8. Adding a comment without a pretense? Intriguing setup. Anticipation is high for the follow up.

  9. Ha…ok Ari, I’m kinda freakin out. But it also exciting! I don’t know what the point of commenting first is, but I’m going along with you here. I was actually thinking about what to make for dinner tonight. So that’s what I will comment on! Lasagna..yum : )

  10. I feel strangely like a guinea pig here, and despite my strong urge to read the post THEN comment, as is tradition, I will do as asked.

It’s tough though. I’m not a follow the directions kind of gal! :)

  11. Now I know how a spammer feels when he’s filling in a comment without even reading the post. I’m about to head back up to read the rest of the article to see where this is going. I can’t lie, this is very different and interesting at the same time.

  12. First thing that comes to mind is, I wonder if you’re working on a 15.3″ laptop like me. Why? The words “When you’re ready, scroll back up and to the end of these periods…” appear very neatly above the fold :-)

    • Ari Herzog says:

Nope, I’m using a 21.5″ iMac monitor set to 1920×1080 resolution. But I also tote a 10.1″ netbook and know a little something about the fold. Glad you approve.

  13. This is hard!LOL I don’t know what to type. Well then, there must be something really good about your post why you are giving instructions to comment before reading.

  14. Gee – you have my head spinning about what I should comment about since you don’t say ‘must be on topic’. So, this is for other viewers who come to your page. If you’re new to Internet marketing there are two key areas where you need to spend your time: Publishing original content and getting high-quality links to your site. You don’t need a hundreds of links as this does not look natural. Just get a handful of good ones and keep the content on your sites fresh.

  15. Hi, Ari. I can’t help but be curious as to why you want us to comment first. I so wanted to take a peek at your post before writing this comment, but, let’s just say I am trusting you on this. So, my here I am…now, I am on way back up… :D

  16. Hey Ari. Reluctant to leave a comment without reading the whole post, but here goes…

Comments are hard to win. People skim read, and while some are happy to leave a generic ‘Enjoyed this post’ message, many aren’t inspired/willing to comment if they haven’t fully digested the article. I certainly prefer people who comment on my blog to have read it first!

Is this perhaps the point you’re intending to make?

    Now to find out…

  17. I actually read the whole article before posting – probably something I learnt from doing a lot of exams – read carefully. Still admit I am a bit confused (and know I obviously do not follow rules). I presume you meant the article on not pleasing the 2% who don’t like what your are doing.

  18. I also read. It was something strange about your request…

  19. I always do what Ari tells me to!

    365Muses

    • Well…not always…like this time I really wanted to know why he would tell us to comment without reading the text commenting on! Do comments really matter? Does a blog post without any comments have the same SEO results and the same post with comments?

  20. I couldn’t do it. I had to read the post. I am not used to this freedom of commenting and I had to continue reading your post. I am sorry I failed!!

  21. To make this blog post interactive and alive. lol! I didn’t read the post but I did read the comments. I’m very curios about what’s your reason behind.

  22. Okay, Ari, I’m delighted to get the chance to comment here on your blog. I think it’s my first comment, although I come back again and again and read your postings with pleasure.

Now, I’m curious to see what you’ve written after the dots…

  23. The sun is shining, big band playing in the back, reading lots of interested stuff today on the internet; today is a good day.

  24. I failed as well, I read the entire post first. I’m interested in the next article to see what your experiment is.

  25. Wow, I am first time writing an irrelevant comment without even reading the post.

  26. I like this article. Good commentors are very good readers. Some people like to read and know about something new topics and they comment genuinely.

  27. Anonymous says:

This is dumb. You are dumb.

  28. FYI, I actually read through your article before writing this comment! So I mean maybe I am not that kind of commenters you were refering to haha. Anyway what a nice way to grasp people attention ;)

  29. Haha I failed too, had to write the article first. Didn’t get any answers though.

  30. I cheated…
I read the reasons before commenting :)

  31. Hello Ari,
    I added a comment.
    What Should I comment on???
Okay i didn’t read this post till now but surely i have checked this blog and read many useful posts.
You are not afraid of spam?
    Are you?

  32. I seems to miss the point here? :-)

  33. It’s hard to do it but I did. I guess following instructions is our first priority when it comes to commenting on one’s post. By reading on the comments it’s very interesting to know the reason why. lol! I’ll keep track of this one.

  34. Nice work! I don’t know why everyone is so paranoid about comments? Comments are always good. Withe keyword luv they are even better

  35. LOL What am i getting myself into. From title i’ll just comment to say that commenting before a reading the entire blog post isn’t all negative. I may be able to decide to share based on the preview/title of a post.

  36. Hi Ari,

My first comment on your blog and I’m glad I found this intriguing post of yours :)

I didn’t follow your instructions, as my curiosity to read the whole post was stronger ;)
