At 10 a.m. on January 23, 2020, the city of Wuhan, China entered lockdown in an effort to quarantine the regional coronavirus outbreak. Public transportation systems were shut down. Highways were blocked. Residents were prohibited from leaving the city without government approval.
What began as a virus in a Chinese province quickly blossomed into a global pandemic. Across the world, political leaders and business executives issued (and are still issuing) their own lockdowns, suspensions, closures, postponements, and directives in a group effort to flatten the curve and prevent the spread of the virus.
Most Closures are Until April 7, Including:
- The launch of Disney+ in France
- Preliminary matches of the East Zone of the AFC Cup 2020
- The lockdown of Balochistan, a province in Pakistan
- The lockdown of Abkhazia, a republic in Georgia
- The suspension of senior activities in Singapore
April 7 is the final day of stay-at-home (and similarly-named) orders for nearly half of the United States that force the closure of non-essential businesses, the shuttering of public and private school systems, and remote working recommendations. A handful of U.S. states end their emergencies on April 12. Delaware and West Virginia are “until further notice.”
What Else is on April 7?
Most important here in the U.S., that’s the date of the Wisconsin presidential primary election. There are 84 delegates at stake.
Milwaukee city leaders anticipate over 100,000 mailed-in absentee ballots, which will involve manual tallying that could take days to know the results.

Which Brings Us to April 8, 2020
What is going to happen? Will all of the lockdowns, closures, suspensions, and other directives around the world be extended another three weeks? Another three months? Or, until further notice?
Do government leaders around the world know something that they’re not telling us? If so, what is it? If not, why is everyone using the same date?
I don’t know.
P.S. Wuhan’s lockdown is scheduled to end on April 8.
