8 Residents Want to be City Councilor
With the resignation of Katy Ives as she moves from City Hall to the State House in January, eight residents submitted letters of interest and resumes and a desire to fill Ives’ unexpired term through the end of 2013.
- Paula Chambers of 31 Federal Street
- Larry Giunta, Jr. of 139 Crow Lane
- Steven Hutcheson of 76 Longfellow Drive
- Larry McCavitt of 5 Madison Street
- Ralph Orlando of 4 William Hall Drive
- Robert Rothberg of 15 School Street
- Warren Russo of 182 Northern Blvd
- Mary Zinck of 6 Laurel Road
This person will likely be named at the January 14 council meeting. The process is to be determined.
If you have any thoughts or questions, post them below.
Both Hutchinson and Mc Cavitt have been on the Council and have been subsequently rejected by the voters. Arguments that either should be the new Councilor should be rejected. They have both had their chance and have been found wanting by their constituants.
I don’t know any of the others.
I’d vote for Mary Zinck.
I think Steve is an excellent choice given his experience on the council, his willingness to listen to his constituents and change his stance on an issue if given enough relevant facts and the fact the he was the closest runner-up to Sullivan in the last race.
Pingback: Questions For Your Next City Councilor
Larry Cavalieri, you probably do not remember me, but our sons played soccer together Tony was on the team and my husband was the soccer coach for many years. Not sure who you are Kathy, but thanks for the support. I have been on the Board of Registrars for sixteen years and I am very aware of local polictics as well as very concerned for this community. I have been a resident of the City for over 50 years having raised my five children here and graduating from NHS the youngest of seven children in my family. I have worked for local doctors for over thirty years. In my current position I am a Practice Manager/Administrator for a four doctor practice. I Manage a staff of about thirty and have three locations. I have volunteered for various things through the schools, sports, Boy Scouts, Pioneer League, and Girl Scouts. As our older two children were growing up and I am sure we will do it all again. My son graduated from NHS then in 2011 graduated from UMass Lowell with a Nuclear/Chemical Engineering degree. When we lost our oldest daughter almost ten years ago now, we decided to add to our family again and have seven year old triplets attending the Bresnahan school.
I have deep concerns for our school system as it is currently struggling especially with the SPED program and lack of leadership in major positions, as well as many excellent dedicated staff leaving the district. I am very concerned for the financial stability of the City and families struggling to stay in their homes financially with all the upcoming new taxes that will be placed on them with the new school and Senior center. I do believe we should have a Senior center for our elderly. I do not support the LHD. As far as the Karp hotel, I do not have a negative feeling towards a hotel in the City. But certainly I would like to learn more about it before commenting about the location etc. I believe the NRA is a big long time issue that needs addressing as well as the eye sore of the dirt parking lots on Merrimac Street. I believe as a City Councillor I could make a positive impact from a different view point.
I have thought about getting more involved in local Politics for many years, then when Katy Ives decided to leave I thought seriously about this and decided to enter my name. I realize this might be bad timing as I am on vacation currently and when I return the one night the Council is voting I cannot attend. My office has planned our Holiday dinner that evening and this has been planned for some months now. As the Practice Manager I am hosting this dinner on Monday the 14th. So, with that being said I think this would possibly eliminate me. If this is the case, I do believe I would consider a run in the fall for a political position. I have had a number of people reach out to me with support and encouragement to do this, and I do believe I could offer a different prespective and experience.
I do remember you ,Mary. Sorry for the Senior Moment.
Thanks for the very well thought out comment.
I would wholeheartedly support you for the Council for the remainder of Councilor Ives term.
I feel that you would be exactly what the Council needs !
