Help Me Find Meaning on My Birthday

by Ari Herzog on Sep. 6, 2011 · 15 comments

Today is my birthday.

If you can’t view my video thoughts above, the link is here.

As one year ends and another begins, I encourage you to think about what we’re doing in this place called the world wide web.

Help me understand why we are here.

Help me understand why you are here.

How can we make magic together?

Barry Judge: “Technology, in and of itself, isn’t that interesting. What’s interesting is how it all comes to life.”

Clay Shirky: “A revolution doesn’t happen when society adopts new tools. It happens when society adopts new behaviors.”

Celebrate my birthday with me and help me find meaning on the web.

For me, one place where meaning comes alive is BudHerzog.org.

When I look at the names of people who donated to a scholarship fund in Dad’s name, I smile. First Giving enables nonprofit organizations and charitable associations to raise funds and provide meaning.

Another place is GovLoop, a social networking site for the government community. With 45,000 users spread across the globe, this is a place I visit to learn what people are thinking and how they are practicing their ideas.

Where do you find meaning on the web?

Thanks for this, Ari. And happy birthday. (Though I guess I missed it by about 30 minutes. Awkward.)

Homer Simpson once said, “Maybe there is no moral; maybe it’s just a bunch of stuff that happened.” There are times when I would like to think there is more to this thing we call “human existence,” and yet I often come to the conclusion that we just are. There is no great mystery, we simply exist and then we’re gone. That’s why I try to exist the best I can, as happy as I can and without being too much of a burden on friends and family. After all, if this is it, then we should focus on what “this” is rather than worrying about what this isn’t.

Happy Birthday!

Darn the character limit of Livefyre, I just lost a big post. Anyways, happy birthday Ari!

Content is where it’s at in my opinion. Let’s focus on great content.

@aribadler Whoa, you’re deep. Too philosophical for my soon-to-sleep head. What’s this got to do with finding meaning on the web?

@Ari Herzog@jennalanger I don’t know Ari, all I know is it was too much so I cut half out to paste it into another post, then went to post and after logging in my original post had disappeared :/

It’s not much, my original post that I wanted to put was maybe 200 words.

Ari, a belated happy birthday to you! Maybe life on the web is about what ife is in general about: know and accept yourself and connect with other people, one cannot go without the other, Oh, before I forget: have some fun!

Life on the web and life in general – I try to lead them both with the same philosophy. People make too much out of what this means or that means when they see it online. It probably translates over from what we do IRL. Life is life, whether in person or in a computer. So, live it to its fullest, try to have some fun along the way, and when you’re done, you’re done. There’s no great mystery. That’s my point.

@Roz Bennetts@Ari Herzog Hey there, the character limit is a function of the browser unfortunately, but I will check with our team to see if there is something we can do to allow for more characters. @Roz Bennetts Sorry you lost that comment, we’ll be adding a “cookie” so it saves the text you have written next time.

My man Ari, happy birthday to you. I love the vid, and other than the casualness vs your biz attire Avatar what would you think if I said you are exactly how I expected you to be?

Ari of the the inquiring mind; too many questions. What is really going on w/ Ari? I guess it all depends on what you are trying to get out of social media. It can provide the opportunity to meet new and interesting people and give the feel of friendship and connectedness. It can also be very fickle and impersonal at times. Me? I try not to read too much into any of it. It is what it is, no more, no less.

It will be interesting to see who is truly being innovative out there, look forward to your posts.
