How to Claim Your Blog with Technorati

by Ari Herzog on Jan. 13, 2011 · 27 comments

After 20 minutes of scratching my head and several automated email messages telling me I was unsuccessfully claiming my blog with Technorati (one of the larger blog registries out there), I learned the secret.

Technorati claim info

All I needed to do was create a blog post, just like this one, and insert 4BGUG24BGFTP somewhere inside.

Once I published the post, the registry would scan the feed and see the new content with the claim code.

It’s pathetic it took me so long. I don’t remember this process from the past, oh so many years ago.

Kudos to Bryan Haines and others around the web for guiding me.

Now you know what I know.

Let us know if you get any decent data from it. I’ve noticed that it’s been far less useful since some time before the 2009 redesign. Back in the day I used to rely on it as a great way to find other blogs that linked to me and now it hardly captures any of them. Actually it is only doing so for one claimed site. I just put in a new claim on my main blog to see if it will make a difference since it still hasn’t been added to their index. (After 2 years)

I previously had ariwriter.com claimed and indexed in their registry; it was recently considered within their top 600 of ranked sites. But with new content here, it was time to claim this one… and I submitted a ticket on Technorati’s Get Satisfaction forum to merge the two claims.

I had this problem and after several weeks of trying to write a post and inserting the code they sent me and them not being able to read it I was ready to give up. Simple very difficult to get their Help Staff to respond.

What solved it for me was inserting the code as the Title of the post and Technorati immediately found it.

Ari Herzog January 13, 2011 at 1:22 PM

Cheers to claiming your blog. But you don’t need to put the code in the title; doing what I did inside a post or a page works just as well. Once it is published to the RSS feed, Technorati will discover it.

At the risk of making myself sound stupid do you need to put the code in the written a body of text or in the body tags of your blog to register. I’m aware the answer may be very obvious but I’d appreciate your help.

Paul,
Just paste the code in the body where you add your article content. No need to go under the hood or into tags.

Cheers for that, I just claimed mine, although I use feed summary so had to put the code at the start of the post I wrote :)

Let’s see if this brings in visitors (re Heidi’s comment)

It doesn’t matter where in your blog you do it. It doesn’t have to be a “post” but could be a static “page.” As long as it’s discoverable by RSS, that’s what counts.

Thanks, Ari. I struggled with this a few years ago and I now want to double check to see if I am list on Technorati. I did post a blog with my code but I don’t think it worked, so I will try it again. What I can’t figure out is where to start on the Technorati site to get my secret code? It’s not obvious (at least to me early in the morning).
I’d appreciate being headed in the right direction.
Thanks!

Isn’t it remarkable when you answer your own question? There was a point last night when I was close to pulling my hair out — but after taking a closer look at the Apache code I was writing and what I was trying to accomplish, I realized what I had missed.

Thanks so much for posting this. I had problems.

Christopher Roberts@Philosophy Blog January 13, 2011 at 11:08 AM

Same head scratching from me when I tried to register my philosophy blog recently – “How on earth did I register my tech blog and social blog?” worked it out through :)

You must have had a quick review Ari, mine took a good week or two.

I try to write blog posts for the future, not the present. It doesn’t always come out that way, though. As I type this sentence, Technorati is indexing things…

Christopher Roberts January 14, 2011 at 12:47 PM

Ok, I get you :)

Hi Ari
One of the problems of running a blog is remembering how you did something.
Things that you think you will never forget… you forget.

And the other things that we have to remember, Passwords!

Should I be claiming mine?

Ari Herzog January 13, 2011 at 1:28 PM

Should you claim your blog? Up to you.

Nice tip here. I’ll try that.

Be real careful about changing your feed location. I had to because I changed my feed from http://retrocollage.com/blog/feed/ to http://blog.retrocollage.com/feed, and I could not do it. Technorati makes you create a new blog claim, but you can’t use the same URL as the original one. It is a mess worth avoiding.

I still have trouble with Technorati when I add my blog. Somehow it doesn’t seem to see the added code in my article

You can also remove the token once your blog is verified…Otherwise the post in which u inserted the code looks a bit weird!

I have a small and brand new blog. In spite of the fact that BlogCatalog declined my submission, Technorati has congratulated me today and my claim was completed in 2-3 days :) ) Nice!

Navid January 28, 2011 at 9:17 PM

Hey Ari,
Seems so simple, but I went through the same process.
Keep up the good Posts!
